The Lions Club of Green Island re
With this in mind our Club organised a Mens Heath Night. We held it on Wednesday the 23rd of February 2000. We were following the example of the Amberley Lions Club who organised the first Mens Heath Night in the South Island, and possibly New Zealand. The response to their night overwhelmed them when 377 local Men came to hear about their Health. We were very happy with approximately 140 Men, particularly as there was a One Day Cricket Match on in Dunedin, between Australia and New Zealand the same night. (We had set our date long before the Cricket Council released theirs) We targeted Men in our Clubs catchment area of Concord, Green Island, Abbotsford, Waldronville, Fairfield and down the coast to Brighton and Taieri Mouth. We enlisted the help of local G.P. Dr Martyn Howells, who with his profile as the then Dunedin Radio Doctor, helped organise the night as well as helping to MC it. Dr Howells contacted 4 specialists covering Urology, Cardiology, Dermatology, and Psychiatry. All the Doctors who were asked leapt at the chance to talk to a large group of men who are there solely to hear about Mens Health. A number of the Specialists had previously taken part in a Seminar organised by the Masonic Trust, in October of last year. We also received support from all of Green Island Doctors and Pharmacies. Our Speakers were Prof Jim Mann, who covered Heart problems, strokes and health in relation to lifestyle and diet. Dr Chris Wisely who spoke on Depression and other psychiatric problems. Dr Martin Strack covered skin problems including melanomas, shingles, and psoriasis. Mr K.P.Samalia who, to use his own words, "got into the R18 stuff that women never have problems with. He covered all the subjects to do with the Prostate and other problems around that area.
We believe that Men's Health issues need to be bought out in the open with nights like this. There are too many Men who do not know what the danger signs are. Being typical Men they do not think it is 'Macho' to go to the Doctor about some small change in their bodies or functions. Unfortunately those small changes are often signs of some illnesses that, unless they are treated early, will end up killing the man. Our Club would be only too happy to pass on our experiences in running one of these nights. As was mentioned earlier we were following the Amberley Lions Club. We wish to acknowledge their Convenor, Doug Stapleton who has made available a full kit, including a video, that laid out how they went about organising their night. We used this kit and changed a few small details to suit our area.
